This one‑day training course explains the requirements of ISO 22476‑1:2022 for CPT equipment, fieldwork, and quality control. Through a combination of classroom instruction and practical demonstrations, it highlights the key changes from previous editions and shows how to apply them in practice. The course is relevant for CPT operators, as well as engineers and project managers who tender for and supervise CPT projects and require reliable, ISO‑compliant data for ground models. It enables participants to update procedures, equipment checks and reports with confidence, and reflects current market capability. As the first CPT equipment supplier to calibrate cones to ISO 22476‑1:2022, Royal Eijkelkamp offers in-house cone calibration (including the new Class 0 penetrometer class).

What the standard covers

ISO 22476-1:2022 establishes the requirements and recommendations for equipment, procedures and reports for electrical cone (CPT) and piezocone (CPTu) penetration tests. Among other things, it defines the type of CPT and cone penetrometer classes, test category classification, penetration depth/length, how to reference surface elevation and test location, and pore pressure dissipation tests.

What’s new in ISO 22476‑1:2022 versus 2012

This training course highlights and clarifies the most significant changes, including:

  • A comprehensive update of calibration requirements for CPT cones, including a full uncertainty budget and explicit attention to temperature effects, bending influences and sensor stability.
  • Introduction of a new 'Class 0' penetrometer class, which provides reduced uncertainty compared to the highest class in the previous edition.
  • Confirmation that the 2012 edition has been withdrawn and the 2022 edition is the current one to implement in your quality system and procedures.

We will translate these changes into practical checklists for your field procedures, equipment selection, calibration certificates and reporting. (See the program below.)

Key learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Select and document the correct test type, penetrometer class and test category for your project in accordance with the 2022 edition.
  • Apply the updated calibration expectations, understanding what an uncertainty budget entails and how temperature, bending and sensor drift/stability are handled under the new rules.
  • Plan and carry out CPT/CPTu in onshore and nearshore settings, ensuring correct zeroing, recording frequencies, penetration length/depth referencing and pore pressure dissipation test documentation.
  • Ensure that your reporting and QA/QC align with the 2022 edition, demonstrating that your deliverables meet the current standard.

Programme (1 day):

  • Introduction to the ISO standard elements.
  • Overview of ISO 22476-1:2022 compared to the 2012 version.
  • Equipment and classes.
  • Execution in the field.
  • Calibration and uncertainty: what the 2022 edition expects from calibration, including demonstration.
  • Reporting and QA/QC: what to report and how to make your deliverables compliant to the 2022 edition.
  • Hands-on and examples of zero reading capture that comply with the 2022 edition, using modern CPT acquisition software (e.g. GeoExplorer 3).

For Whom

  • Geotechnical engineers, CPT operators and project managers involved in planning, executing, calibrating, QA/QC or interpreting CPT/CPTu.
  • CPT end users and data/reporting specialists who want to align software and workflows with the latest ISO requirements.
