Over 90 years old and still going strong: Mechanical Cone Penetration Testing.
The mechanical cone was developed at the very beginning of CPT operations in the 1930s. CPT technology has come a long way since then, but mechanical CPT is still used nowadays because the method is simple, very robust and relatively low cost.
Initially only the cone resistance was measured, but with the introduction of the Friction Jacket Cone the sleeve friction could be measured as well.
Mechanical CPT requirements
The system uses a mechanical cone (preferably a Friction Jacket Cone), standard 36 mm diameter CPT tubes, 16 mm diameter inner rods, a standard CPT pusher with a push/pull clamp and a hydraulic measuring head mounted on the CPT pusher.
