When Cone Penetration Testing was developed in The Netherlands in the 1930s, it was done by pushing a mechanical cone into the soil using CPT tubes. The readings were then recorded manually by the CPT operator. Nowadays, mechanical CPT has largely been replaced by electrical CPT.
