When Cone Penetration Testing was developed in The Netherlands in the 1930s, it was done by pushing a mechanical cone into the soil using CPT tubes. The readings were then recorded manually by the CPT operator. Nowadays, mechanical CPT has largely been replaced by electrical CPT. It is still used however, because this method is simple, very robust and relatively low cost.
